Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Research printed in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals purchasing these medications must be aware of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery suggests a return to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally have a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the way of the injections accounts for the amplified rebound.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication leads to appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

Patient Accounts

Individuals who have stopped the jabs describe a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," recalled one woman.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
